

Years on Display During the most impressionable years of my youth I lived in a tropical paradise secluded from the world. For the Japanese it was a popular vacation place, and I understand why; Okinawa must have been touched by Midas. Its gilded beaches reflected watery orange sunsets, and its magnificent lagoons sparkled like emeralds in the light. It was a jewel off the coast of mainland Japan, hanging precariously away from the chain, vulnerable to the oceans that surrounded it.
